Wofford College right-hander Lucas Mahlstedt announced his intentions to transfer to Clemson on Saturday afternoon and became the second Terrier to do so this summer.
The reliever played a big role for the Terriers in 2023, recording a 2.69 ERA and six saves over 82⅔ innings pitched. Clemson is looking for a replacement for left-hander Ryan Ammons, who was drafted by the Boston Red Sox in the 10th round of the MLB Draft on July 10 as the No. 298 overall pick and indicated he planned to sign.
Mahlstedt follows Terriers right-handed pitcher Matthew Marchal, who announced his transfer to Clemson on Twitter on June 8.
The pair showcased a significant amount of time on the mound for Wofford, throwing a combined 176 innings with 161 strikeouts in 2023.
With the two schools just an hour’s drive from each other, it wasn’t difficult for Clemson to take notice of the two arms and add the Terriers to their pitching staff.
These two leave a huge sore spot in the Terrier’s roster, but will greatly assist the Tigers after key arms like Caden Grice and Ammons were selected in the 2023 MLB Draft.
