The Hillsdale Academy boys golf team completed their impressive 2023 regular season with another match win. The team traveled to the Binder Park Golf Course to participate in the SCAA Championship. The team won the championship and the regular season standings trophy on Monday, May 22. At the championship, the Colts had their lowest 18-hole team score total on the season with a 314. The Jackson Christian Royals were the second place team but had a 373 final score.
Head coach Rolla Frisinger and the Colts had three golfers take all of the top three spots in the championship jamboree. Rykert Frisinger won the event with an individual score of 73. The junior Colt was joined by teammates Conner Welden and Ridley Fast, each of whom tied for second place with final scores of 79. Finishing four strokes behind was eighth grader Lincoln Knirk, who took fifth overall with a final score of 83. Sophomore Kahle Welden took eighth overall for the Colts with a final score of 85.
The Will Carleton Academy golf team took seventh in the event with a final score of 408. The team was led by Tyler Slade, who took 15th and had a final score of 93. Slade had three pars and a birdie on hole 17. Ben Lutz had one par and a final score of 100. Will Thielen had two pars and a score of 103. Julian Harman had one par and a score of 112. David Maier had a final score of 126. Hunter Fitton had a final score of 142.
Frisinger’s match highlights included two birdies on the front nine. He had 12 pars and finished just two strokes over even. Senior Conner Welden also had two birdies on the first nine, both coming on par-three holes. The senior also had seven pairs. Junior Ridley Fast had two birdies, one on the front nine and one on the back nine. He had a total of seven pairs. Knirk had two birdies as well, one each on the front and back nine. Knirk had both birdies on three-par holes. Knirk also had four couples. Kahle Welden had six pars. Grayson Young had a final score of 125, sinking a putt for par on hole 18.
With the conclusion of their regular season, both teams will participate in a D4 regional tournament on June 2 at Ella Sharp Park in Jackson. The event starts around 9:00 am and consists of 18 holes. The Academy looks to be a major player for another regional title shot and state qualification. The team is currently ranked fifth in D4 state rankings. Frisinger is ranked sixth and Fast ranked eighth in individual state rankings.
