Tan among the early leaders at the NCAA championship

SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. — Texas Tech freshman Shannon Tan made two birdies on each side for a 4-under-par 68 and was in the clubhouse with a share of second place during Friday’s first round of the women’s golf NCAA championship tournament at Grayhawk Golf Club.

Oklahoma State’s Rina Tatematsu also shot 68, joining Tan at two shots behind clubhouse leader Maddison Hinson-Tolchard, another Okahoma State player.

With players from half the 30 teams still on the course, Texas Tech was tied for 12th place after shooting 3-over 291 as a team. Lauren Zaretsky birdied two of her last three holes to shoot 2-under 70. The Red Raiders’ other counting scores came from Chiara Horder and Libby Fleming, who carded 75 and 78, respectively. Gala Dumez’s 82 was the discard score.

The teams are scheduled to play 54 holes, followed by a cut to the top 15 teams and the nine lowest-scoring players not on those teams for the fourth round. The individual NCAA champion will be determined by the 72 holes of stroke play, and the top eight teams then advance to the match-play bracket.

Oklahoma State had the clubhouse lead at 8-under, but three teams still playing in the second wave were closing in on the Cowgirls with Wake Forest at 7-under, Baylor at 4-under and South Carolina at 3-under.

Men’s basketball

Texas Tech picked up a commitment Friday from Eemeli Yalaho, a 6-foot-8, 230-pound forward from Western Reserve Academy, a prep school in Hudson, Ohio.

Yalaho played for Finland in the FIBA Under-18 European Championship this past summer and averaged 8.4 points and 4.1 rebounds. He attracted scholarship offers from 16 schools and chose Tech over Georgetown, Providence and Nebraska, among others.
