The Biloxi Shuckers are located in Biloxi, Miss., just a stone’s throw away from the Gulf of Mexico. Formerly the Huntsville Stars, the team relocated from Huntsville, Ala., following the conclusion of the 2014 season. The team name was chosen by fans from such finalists as “Shrimps,” “Black Jacks,” “Beacon,” “Mullets” and “Schooners.” The “Shuckers” moniker celebrates the city’s culture as a central part of the seafood industry.

This coastal town hadn’t been host to a baseball club for over 100 years until the Shuckers debuted in 2015. In fact, the only other professional team to call Biloxi home was the Gulfport-Biloxi Sand Crabs, who played in the Class C Cotton States League (a Minor League) in 1907 for a single season. The Shuckers are a member of the storied Southern League, which has its roots dating back to 1885.

MGM Park opened its doors in 2015, but the Shuckers had to wait past Opening Day to make their Biloxi debut. The club played its first 55 games of that season on the road in various stadiums, waiting for construction of their new home to be finished. Even when it was ready for games, there were parts of the park that were still in various stages of completion. The Shuckers have long since settled in to their beautiful stadium, producing several Major League All-Stars along the way. The Shuckers won the division in 2015, despite their epic season-opening road trip, and added another division title in 2019.

Biloxi is a resort city full of casinos and beautiful coastal views. It sustained significant damage when Hurricane Katrina hit in 2005, and while the storm destroyed much of the infrastructure, the city has largely been rebuilt in the 17 years since the tragedy. MGM Park pushes right up against Route 90, which travels right along the coast of Mississippi, and I-110. Directly across the highway to the park’s south is one of the city’s many casinos, and to its southwest is Biloxi Beach.

In front of the park’s South Gate sits a life-size gold lion statue in keeping with MGM’s iconography. From there, fans enter through the gates and will climb up a few flights of stairs to reach the concourse behind the scoreboard in center field. The berm sits out in right field and the rest of the concourse wraps around the field, stopping at the foul pole in left field, where the park’s Northeast entrance is. The box office is at this entrance, and there’s a small lawn across the sidewalk where picnic games may be set up. Fans walk up a grand staircase to enter through this part of the park.

Most of the seating is field level, save for two suite-level party boxes on the first- and third-base sides. At the very end of the left field seating is the Left Field Terrace, where groups can book the space and be treated to an all-you-can-eat food menu, complimentary non-alcoholic beverages and table tops and swivel chairs.

As one can imagine, MGM Park offers some southern staples alongside typical ballpark fare. If you’re craving an iconic po’ boy sandwich, Pearl’s Po Boys on third-base concourse is where you should go. Behind section 109 is the Aw Shucks Gulf Grill, which offers oysters, jambalaya, sausage and more. The stadium isn’t without its inclusive options — the Beacon Grill on the third-base concourse offers turkey burgers, fruit and salads.

For more traditional ballpark food, Shuckers Snacks offers popcorn, nachos, cracker jacks and pretzels, and Shuck n Cluck Chicken has all the chicken staples one could need. Barq’s Root Beer was founded in Biloxi, so naturally, there is a Barq’s Creamery directly behind home plate that serves a float in a Shuckers mason jar, root beer and other desserts.

“Schooners” may not have been chosen as the team name, but it still made its way into Shuckers lore as the mascot’s namesake. Schooner is a seagull with a bright yellow beak, blue feathers around his face and gray and white coloring.

Just two blocks from the park is the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino — you can’t miss it in the stadium’s skyline. There are also three other casinos within two miles east of the park. If casinos aren’t your thing, though, Biloxi Beach is nearby for swimming, relaxing and exploring; and it’s the perfect place to catch a gorgeous sunset! The Biloxi Lighthouse, built in 1848, offers guided tours and is just a two-minute drive and a 13-minute walk from the stadium. The Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum also lies right next to the Biloxi Bay Bridge.

The area is a seafood lover’s dream, with a variety of chain restaurants, upscale steakhouses and hole-in-the-wall gems in the immediate area. Mary Mahoney’s Old French House boasts locally sourced seafood at just a seven-minute walk from the park, and McElroy’s Harbor House is across the street with views of the gulf. For a more low key atmosphere, Parrain’s Jambalaya Kitchen serves top-notch cajun food. Really, you can’t go wrong with any place you go.

In addition to the plethora of casinos in the area, there are an abundance of regular hotels along the coast both to the east and west of the park. You don’t have to travel more than three miles from the stadium to find a good establishment for a great price.

The closest team to Biloxi is the Pensacola Blue Wahoos. By nature of being on the coast, it’s about a three-hour drive north until you hit the next ballpark in the state, the Mississippi Braves in Pearl (a suburb of Jackson). Traveling northeast, one can pass by three different stadiums in Alabama, with plenty of options to go from there.

Biloxi is quite a ways from both its parent organization in Milwaukee and the other teams in the system, although all the teams are clustered in the eastern part of the country. Triple-A Nashville is the closest affiliate at 500 miles.
