Reds agree deal with Dutch forward Gakpo

On the day the Premier League resumed after a six-week World Cup break, Liverpool bolstered their attacking stocks after agreeing to sign forward Cody Gakpo from PSV Eindhoven.

The Dutchman starred in Qatar by scoring three goals and is now on his way to England to finalize a switch to join Juergen Klopp’s squad on Merseyside.

“PSV and Liverpool have reached an agreement on the proposed transfer of Cody Gakpo,” an official club statement read.

“The 23-year-old attacker will leave for England imminently where he will be subjected to the necessary formalities ahead of the completion of the transfer.”

PSV general manager Marcel Brands confirmed Gakpo’s anticipated transfer would be a “record” for the Eredivisie club.

Hirving Lozano’s move to Napoli in 2019 for a reported 42 million euros ($A62m) was the previous highest sale by the Dutch outfit.

“Both clubs are not making any announcements about the transfer fee,” the Eindhoven club statement added.

“But this is a record transfer for PSV,” Brands said.

Having beaten Manchester United to the signing of Uruguayan Darwin Nunez in June, the Reds are now set to do the same again by sealing a move for Gakpo when the winter transfer window opens on January 1.

With Colombia international Luis Diaz facing an extended period on the sideline after aggravating a knee injury during a mid-season training break in Dubai, Liverpool have accelerated attempts to bolster their forward line by moving for Gakpo.
