Angels’ Shohei Ohtani, Mike Trout, Taylor Ward, Luis Rengifo up for MLB awards – San Bernardino Sun

Shohei Ohtani was named a finalist for four awards on Thursday.

The Angels’ two-way star is a finalist for the Silver Slugger Award as a DH and as a utility player. He is also a finalist for two Players’ Choice Awards: the MLB Player of the Year and American League Outstanding Player.

The big prize for Ohtani would be a second straight AL MVP Award. The finalists will be announced on Nov. 7 and the winner on Nov. 17.

Mike Trout is also a finalist for the Silver Slugger and the Players’ Choice AL Comeback Player of the Year.

Taylor Ward (outfield) and Luis Rengifo (utility) are also finalists for Silver Sluggers.

The Silver Slugger Awards, selected by a vote of managers and coaches, recognize the best offensive player at each position in each league. The winners will be announced on Nov. 10.

Major league players vote for the Players’ Choice Awards. Those winners will be announced on Nov. 3.

Ohtani is up against New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge for both Players’ Choice Awards. There was no other finalist listed for the AL award because no one else received 5% of the vote. Paul Goldschmidt of the St. Louis Cardinals is the third finalist for the MLB Player of the Year Award.

Trout’s competition for Comeback Player of the Year is Houston Astros right-hander Justin Verlander and the Yankees’ Matt Carpenter.

The other Silver Slugger finalists at DH are the Houston Astros’ Yordan Alvarez, the Yankees’ Giancarlo Stanton, the Toronto Blue Jays’ George Springer and the Texas Rangers’ Adolis Garcia.
