The LIV Golf Tour wants to produce a behind-the-scenes show, similar to the PGA Tour’s Netflix series which comes out in early 2023.
As reported by Bloomberg, LIV Golf has approached various production companies with a view to making a docu-series inspired by the Drive to Survive Netflix show all about Formula One.
The Saudi-backed series would have to pitch the show to a streaming service or TV network. Their efforts haven’t worked just yet and the Tour has declined to comment on the matter.
The idea of the show would be to increase fan engagement. It seems the LIV Golf Tour is constantly trying to prove itself through different strategies and a behind-the-curtain style show could be a way for golf fans to become more familiar with the players.
Netflix would be an unlikely source of a show about the LIV Golf Tour, as the popular platform is already releasing a new series about the PGA Tour next year.
The new league, commissioned by Greg Norman, still hasn’t nailed down a broadcast deal with a TV network, despite being strongly linked with Fox Sports. CBS, NBC and ESPN all have deals with the PGA Tour, while Amazon and Apple TV reportedly weren’t interested in working with LIV.
Since the first event of the inaugural LIV season at the beginning of June, the series has signed some of the sport’s most recognizable players such as Phil Mickelson, Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka and Bryson DeChambeau.
Seven events later, we have reached the season-ending Team Championship in Miami. Along the way, a handful of players and LIV Golf have filed a lawsuit against the PGA Tour. The Tour has reportedly fired back with a federal civil lawsuit against Saudi Arabia’s Public Investment Fund.
At the beginning of October, LIV Golf started a strategic alliance with the little-known MENA Tour in their pursuit of Official World Golf Ranking points.
OWGR points and a broadcast deal could be the final pieces of the LIV puzzle to begin their expanded 14-event schedule in 2023. A new docu-series could certainly bring new eyes to the league everyone is talking about.
